“IT’S SO COLD IN DA D” RAPPER TBABY TALKS!
It’s so cold in the D, but it’s even colder on the Internet.
One of the hottest clips on the Net over the last week has been a music video titled “It’s So Cold in the D” from a Detroit rapper, T-Baby. As of press time, the vid — which looks like something you might accidentally run across late at night on public access television — had racked up over 300,000 hits on YouTube. It has been featured on a number of prominent hip-hop Web sites and has become something of a Detroit anthem — sadly, for all the wrong reasons.
UNIQUEDAILY.COM linked the video, then MEDIATAKEOUT.COM read a post on BLACKARAZZI.COM, and linked the video, droving more than 42,000 views to YouTube. “Now We’ve Heard Some GHETTO ANTHEMS… But This Song Here HAS GOTS TO BE THE WORST.”
The comments linked to the vid — there are more than 3,000 listed — were equally as harsh.
“The name of this group should be ‘Tone Def,’ ” read one comment. “This is probably the worst song I’ve ever heard in my life.” A generous comment, believe it or not, compared to other critics.
Why the negativity? It’s a combination of the video’s low-budget visuals, poorly synced-up audio — the beat derails during the first chorus and never properly meshes with the lyrics again — and T-Baby’s grammatically problematic and and lyrically challenged flow.
“It’s soooo cold in the D,” she rap-sings in the chorus, “how the (bleep) do we ’spose to keep peace?”
For her part, T-Baby — 30-year-old eastside Detroiter LaTonya Myles — says she doesn’t mind the negative criticism.
“I really don’t care,” she said in a phone interview last week. “They’re going to hate anyway on me.”
The former Denby High School student, who cites Mary J. Blige as an influence, wrote the song for Mason Graham, her friend who was shot and killed at a Coney Island in 2006. She recorded the song last year at a studio on Eight Mile, and the video — which also features several of Myles’ friends, as well as her 10-year-old son — was shot last October by local videographer Leo Williams.
Dozens of response videos have been uploaded to YouTube, including one that remixes the song with vocals from 2Pac and another where the song is played over footage of the deadly videotape from “The Ring.” Most of the clips, however, are of people simply laughing at the song.
The clip — which up until about a week ago had garnered only 600 hits — has even made its way around Detroit hip-hop circles. At last week’s video shoot for Kid Rock’s “Roll On” at the Motown Historical Museum, Detroit rappers Trick Trick and Paradime were joking amongst themselves about the clip.
Williams, who shot the video on a $300 budget, defends T-Baby and the video in an e-mail written to The Detroit News. “The pain she felt drove her to do this,” he writes. “It came from her soul, which is something a lot of (detractors) haven’t got or haven’t gotten in touch with lately.” He calls the song a “poignant little ditty.”
He may not be the only one. Despite the negative comments, there are signs the song is catching on.
When several hip-hop blogs wrote about the alleged assault against Chicago rapper Yung Berg at a Detroit nightclub last week, they used the phrase “it’s so cold in the D” in their reports. And the song is undeniably catchy; listen to it once, and it’s hard to get out of your head. Myles says the song will be included on her album, “The Ride or Die Chick,” which she plans to release by the end of the year. Since the video started gaining attention, she says she’s been fielding phone calls from folks who say they’d like to manage her career.
As for the Internet rumors that T-Pain and Lil Wayne want to remix the song, at this point they appear to be just that: Internet rumors. And the haters? She says to go ahead and keep hating.
“I really don’t care what people say. They can say whatever they want to say,” Myles says. “I’m gonna keep doing what I do. ‘Cause I rap, and that’s what I like to do.”

Lord have mercy. This woman needs a job. Some people just don’t have it, and she’s one of them. “A poignant little ditty?” C’mon! As a Detroiter, I have to say that this sh*t is embarrassing. Grieving? Write a poem T-Baby. Leave the Hip Hop to those who have the talent.

The bitch lover her some damn orange!
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
She can’t spell worth a damn. I understand her desire, I respect her drive, but she will never ever sell more than 10 copies of anything. And rest assured at least 9 of those people better be family, or they will want their money back.
I’d buy John McCain a Mountain Dew and Gov. Palin’s daughter Bristol a diaphragm before I’d put out money to hear this lady rap again.
But one things for sure - It’s definately COLD in the D. I am going to put on a jacket AND ear muffs.
* thoroughly embarassed *

Jesus Christ man, she has more nuts than anyone on the planet for releasing this garbage! Well my fellow detroit rappers, you can forget about any rappers in the d getting any attention whatsoever. She fucked it up for everyone with that one. Im dumbfounded, embarassed, and nauseated. And she actually had the nerve to say something about having a man. He should be real with her, because not only is she making an ass of herself, she is making an ass of her man, and detroit in general. we dont need any more bad press, trust me. On the real sweetie, i feel you on trying to get your bread up, but as a black brotha to a sistah, stop this nonsense immediately, please. That shit was worse than william hung by far!

Yeah the song needs some polishing, but it really is a good song and it’s catchy. I’m happy for T-Baby and I hope she can get some success. Really Trick-Trick should holla at her and do a song with her to help her out. Besides, who hasn’t ever thought to themselves “How the f**k we ‘posed to keep peace”?
I know I have.
The video is hilarious though.
And to the haters, STFU!!!!!
September 3rd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Ok…I am going to acknowledge that I have not seen this abomination of a so-called “rap song” because unlike the rest of you slack-jawed negroes, I spent last week watching the Democratic National Convention and didn’t have time to find out how “Cold in the D” it was, but the fact that the Detroit News actually did a story on this bullshit troubles me!
This chick can’t even write a coherent sentence. I mean look at that “statement” at the end! It’s just one of the world’s longest run-on sentences. We should start a thread of things we would rather be doing than watching that hideous so-called woman (By The Way, She’s 30!!!) stutter and stammer her way through a song. I’m more ashamed of the 300K + hits that this song has gotten, while great music by Detroit artists doesn’t get a second look. Like the many who have come before me have said, I shall be covering up Olde English D on my Baseball cap out of sheer embarassment.
It may be cold in the D, so go put a coat on and warm the fuck up!

I feel most of the comments that have been posted thus far. This song by T-Baby pushes the envelope between a hardcore rap song with a real message and something that a friend should have said, “NO NO and NO” to. However, I respect the sistah for doing the song b/c Detroit is very cold, literally and figuratively. I’m not from the 313 but any person not under a rock is aware of Detroit’s reputation as dangerous and crime-ridden city. The song is talking about the rapper couping with the shooting death of her friend and her question of ‘How the f*ck we spose to keep peace?’ is rhetorical but yet is one which we need an answer to- in Detroit, Baltimore, LA, St. Louis, ATL, Camden, DC, Philly, etc. The problem of crime and poverty in America needs addressing- real talk. Shout out to T-Baby. Keep doin your thing, just work on the performance of your future songs and videos and you’ll be straight.
Peace.

girl girl girl…that “Reycord” is so bad the only thing its going to be good for is using as a coaster…or u could give them away as christmas gifts, seeing how u will definitely have plenty left over. The video was very lame and low budget. But the chorus is a catchy one and its going to stick around like a guilty pleasure…eventhough I hate it, I find myself singing it at the oddest moments and the other day I was in a chatroom with someone on the other side of the planet and they just busted out sanging “its so coooollld in the D” and i was like WTF…this shit is going to be like I Love New York, you hate it but for some reason you find yourself addicted to it. But once again…dont get it twisted…the song and video is still garbage.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:16 am
When I saw this video I was so embarrassed for her and the people standing on the side of her not knowing what to do or how to act.. I understand and get the message, however, the deliverance is just plain ghetto, ignorant and embarrassing!! She sound illiterate… This video should be shown throughout elementary and junior high school on the importance of staying in school.
Embarrassed 2 be A Detroiter

Wait a minute. I couldn’t even read the whole thing, I just had to defend my city. This ain’t no Detroit anthem, by any means. I understand she may be from a rough part of Detroit, but all of Detroit is not hood. It has bad parts, but it has nice ones too. And she couldn’t even rap on the beat. No, I REFUSE.
I will acknowledge being a hater. I HATE this song, and I HATE the delivery. It was all a hot mess. Now if people mean hater like, I wanna be her, that’s a joke.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
How did I know she was from the East Side of Detroit??? How the hell did I know that shit??? This bitch is 30??? What the fuck is wrong with the world. A mind is really a terrible thing to waste.
And why is it that when people don’t like something is it always considered “hating”?
September 7th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
way to take a bunch of info and pictures from off her myspace and then put your blogs url on them like its exclusive.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:48 am
With all of that orange on, she is officially the Florida Evans of Hip Hop.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
While I think the delivery could have been a little better, you have to look at the broader implications here. It’s obvious that T-baby may not be the most polished/intellectual individual, she seems to be doing the best she thinks she can. I’m from Detroit and unfortunately, there are so many people like her walking around with “blinders” on preventing them from seeing life outside of their situation. That is why it is important for us who know better to help her and those like her instead of hating on her. Honestly, I like this song–or the idea. Yea, I think its hilarious like everyone else, but you HAVE to respect her position. She used this as a venting tool. Her story is one I cannot relate to, but its obviously one common among many people. This is her and so many like her. Respect it. If you don’t like it be apart of the movement for change.

September 9th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
This is in response to “The Man’s” comment…………….WTF. do you mean I should have known she was from the Eastside. I am a lifelong Detroiter (eastside) and I denounce this nonsense and your comment, this mess has nothing to do with the eastside. We have enough nonsense going on with the City. This right here takes the cake. Stand for something of fall for anything. Help us Lord!
I hope everyone is registered to vote. Yes we can! GO OBAMA!
September 10th, 2008 at 1:03 am
Man if u aint with this T-baby U dont have a clue! I’m loving this cold n da d. got it as a ringtone, song on my myspace page, and all my friends supporting it. Put ya T-Baby Orange On!!!!!!!!
September 11th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Come on now T-Baby, you’re not as ignorant as we seem to think you are. You’ve obviously seen other videos on Youtube, and I doubt that you didn’t know it was wack before you uploaded it. The song is wack, the dance is wack, the cemetery scene is wack, the portraits of dead people in caskets is morbid, the sleeping individual on a restaurant floor is creepy, not to mention a plethora of other things gone horribly wrong with this video. I’ve seen some dreadful videos in my time, but thus far yours takes the cake. Consider a new line of work.
September 11th, 2008 at 2:26 am
This chick is out of her mind. She cannot rap, her lyrics make no sense at all. I hope she realizes that her video is nothing but a sad stereo type. Her language in the song was horrible. Sure all rappers cuss but usually when they are doing a serious song about death they tone it down. This chick needs to take that ugly weave out hear head, put down the mic and go to school, cuz its clear her sorry behind never finished the 8th grade.

Shes on to something special here…when you think of it she was paying tribute to the fallen in her circle. It seems that the Angels looked down on her with sincere thanks. I truly think T Baby may be deal bound very soon. Nationally she received spins and tons of press so it’s time for the Remix!
September 29th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
This is a hot mess! The killer part is, this 30 year old woman will make a career off this non sense! She is the epitme of a GH…(Ghetto Hoe) and it saddens me to watch a sista diminish to such a level. I quote “I WILL BE DOIN SOME CONSERTS TO,I WRITE MY OWN MUSIC AND EVERYTHING MY NUMBER WHERE I CAN BE REACHED IS 313-720-3541 I CAN DRAW REAL GOOD” WTH! Is she serious? Lawd… Jesus loves all the little children… all the little children of the world. One more thing… isn’t that the same hoodie she wore in the video??? Help That! Lmao!

This is the worst song that I have ever heard in my entire life and I am hating hard that this is even getting any air play.
