At least she had a choice!

The United Nation’s Children’s Fund recognized a handful of photographers with honors in their annual Photo of the Year contest. From Afghanistan to the Phillipines, their work exposes horrid conditions facing some of the world’s children.

The image is startling — a 40-year-old groom sitting beside his 11-year-old future bride. Photographer Stephanie Sinclair, who took the photo last year in Afghanistan, asked the pre-teenage bride what she felt on the day of her engagement.

“Nothing,” said the girl, according to Sinclair. “I do not know this man. What am I supposed to feel?” (SOURCE).

Isaiah Washington, Kimberly Elise and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator, Shonda Rhimes (and others) show their support for the striking writers this past week. The Writers Guild of America announced Monday that it has denied the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s waiver request to allow striking union scribes to prepare material for next month’s 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Which means they will probably do the same thing to the Oscars!

Although his old Grey’s Anatomy’ castmates were there in droves (including his nemesis, the bitchy Katherine Heigl), the former Dr. Burke showed that he was all about unity.

I read an interesting commentary on KING-MAG.COM about Christopher Avery and Andrew Butler, who were college students, with bright futures, until they decided to rob a bank!

“The two men, both black, both in college, were recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for armed robbery. Avery was a theatre major on partial scholarship…Butler was an engineering major whose summer internship at Kroger’s fell through…The two of them said, there were only two choices: Steal the money or drop out.

BET takes a look at what it means to be a black person in 21st century America on the Dec. 9 episode of “Meet the Faith,” with host Dr. Ian Smith. The show will explore the life of bi-racial author David Matthews, who “passed” for 20 years of his life. His story is a lifelong struggle with his racial identity that briefly led him into drugs and crime and eventually to “coming out” as a black man and is chronicled in the book, “Ace of Spades.”

The LA Times wrote an interesting piece on BET’s plight to return back to the GOLDEN years of programming. I have a suggestion! BRING BACK TEEN SUMMIT!!

As BET enters the last stage of a three-year plan to broaden its appeal with original programming and scripted series, Hudlin maintains that “Sunday Best” and other new series such as “Baldwin Hills,” “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is” and “American Gangster” vividly illustrate how BET has moved well beyond its menu of raunchy rap videos and footage of scantily clad dancers.

Pioneering rapper KRS-One will launch a counter offense to the growing problem of guns and violence plaguing America and the world, by officially relaunching the Stop The Violence movement, an anti-violence effort led by superstar members of the Hip-Hop community. The original Stop The Violence movement was launched in 1989 by KRS-One, born Kris Parker, in response to growing violence in the Hip-Hop community, as well as the death of his original partner, DJ Scott La Rock. So far, KRS-One has enlisted Lil’ Wayne, Ludacris, Pastor Troy, Chingy, Rick Ross, Cassidy, Ludacris, Jalil of Whodini, Hakim of Channel Live and Busta Rhymes have contributed PSA’s for The Stop The Violence Movement. “We influence every inner-city in the world,” KRS-One told AllHipHop.com. “It’s like all of us paying attention to a…certain attitude about life that we are all kind of feeling. I think everybody wants to see Hip-Hop just balance itself out and grow a little more.”

STUDY SHOWS RAP VIDEOS HARM BLACK GIRLS

October 19th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Politics

erica.jpg

Watching rap music videos that are overly sexy and violent can lead to alcohol abuse and promiscuity among young black girls, according to a study into sexual stereotypes in rap music footage.

The research was based on a survey of 522 African-American girls aged 14 to 18 who were asked how often they watched rap videos, questioned about their sex lives and asked to provide a urine sample for a marijuana screening.

U.S. researchers found young black girls who spent more time watching rap music videos were more likely to binge drink, have sex with multiple partners, test positive for marijuana and have a negative body image.
